Timely and Affordable Backwater Valve Installation Toronto

Backflow from sewers has long been a problem in Hamilton.

It seems that after nearly every heavy rain event the municipal sewers become overwhelmed and homeowners all over town wind up with dirty water in their basements.

Thankfully there’s a pretty easy answer to this problem and it’s called a backwater valve.

What is a Backwater Valve and How Does it Work?

A backwater valve is quite a simple concept, although it does require the expertise of a licensed plumber to install. In a nutshell, the backwater valve is just that: a valve that prevents water from backing into your home from the Hamilton sewer system. It’s a one-way valve that lets water out and prevents water from coming back in.

Does Your Home Need a Backwater Valve?

One simple question can help determine if your home could benefit from the installation of a backwater valve and this is it: “Does sewer water back up into your basement when it rains hard?” If it does then you probably need a backwater valve. (If you find you have groundwater in your basement following heavy rains or snowmelt you may need to install a sump pump instead.)

Check your backwater valve

You should check your backwater valve every 2-3 months or before a forecasted heavy rainfall. This will ensure that the valve is functioning properly. Debris found in the valve will most likely prevent it from functioning properly.

Follow these steps to clear and maintain your backwater valve

Disclaimer: Always wear protective gloves and eye protection.

  • Open the cap on the backwater valve and check for any debris.
  • Flush the valve with a bucket of water or a garden hose to remove the debris.
  • If deposits of grease or other debris remain, scrubbing may be required.
  • When completed, ensure that the cap is placed back on the backwater valve and that it is tightly secured.

Where Should the Backwater Valve Be Installed and How Does it Prevent Flooding?

A backwater valve is installed on the sewer line in your basement to prevent sewer lines from allowing water to flow back into the home. If properly installed, the backwater valve will only flow one-way; sewage can flow out, but not back into the home.

The Province of Ontario currently only approves of the Mainline Full port Backwater Valve for installation on the main sanitary sewer lateral of homes.

Backwater Valve Maintenance Hamilton

Expert plumbers recommend annual backflow valve maintenance checkups. It is important for all the moving parts to have free movement and to clear away any debris.

Can I Do A DIY Backwater Valve Installation?

No. Only Licensed Plumbing Companies may install backflow valves. Aquatech Hamilton licensed plumbing company installs backwater valves and could help you install one.

If you’re still not sure whether or not you would benefit from a backwater valve or if you’d like to book an appointment for a backwater valve installation, give Aquatech Hamilton a call today.

We had some issues with moisture in our basement as we back on to the Bruce trail hillside. I contacted Aquatech and within a couple days, Shawn came out and assessed the issue, made recommendations and supplied a quotation. This was all done quickly and very professionally. Their pricing was competitive with the other two quotes I received. I chose Aquatech because of Shawn and their excellent reviews. Shawn was a pleasure to deal with. If I had a question, he always picked up his phone and never rushed me. Slava led the 4-man crew that performed the work. He was also very professional and kept me in the loop with their progress each day. He also spent the time to explain the process as I have a habit of asking many questions. Slava and his team worked during four of the hottest days of the summer and never complained. They completed the work on time. I cannot believe how hard they worked. They even made a point of cleaning up the work site before they left. I would highly recommend them.

Excellent service and quality of workmanship. I had a massive wrap-around deck that had to be removed in order to complete the work. The employees saved the joist and labelled each board allowing me to keep the order consistent. As a result I was able to save significant money on the rebuild only having to purchase decking boards. This consideration was unexpected and definitely appreciated. I would recommend this company with confidence to any of my friends or family.
